This blog post might be of help: http://www.infopathdev.com/blogs/mel_balsamo/archive/2009/02/04/comparing-items-in-a-list-against-an-updated-data-source.aspx. Although the technique discussed there does not totally remove the values that are not in the SharePoint list, you can use some data validation to compare your dropdown values against the items in your SharePoint list. This is assuming that everytime your workflow (approval form) starts, it removes the selected dropdown value in your SharePoint list.

Cheers!

Filter dropdown list based on SQL and SP??

I have a dropdown that is populated from a (READ ONLY) view in a SQL database, but I also need to exclude items based on a sharepoint list.

Items in the dropdown are selected and are used to create an approval form, once selected and submitted the approval form is started. Items that have been selected and an approval form started should no longer be displayed in the dropdown, so I need the dropdown to display only items based on the SQL view that are not in the SP list.

I do not have access to write anything to SQL.
