How do you get an Infopath Workflow TaskForm to auto populate with values from a Sharepoint List?

I am using Infopath Task Forms with Workflows and MOSS.

In my workflow code, I routinely set values of an InfoPath TaskForm with values passed from another Infopath Task Form using TaskProperies.ExtendedProperties.

My problem though is that somehow this method doesn't work when trying to retrieve values from a Sharepoint document library or list:

I can get the value from any colum in the List by calling: this.workflowProperties.Item["ListColumnName"]. I have Debugged and tested and I do in fact ge this value correctly. So my code looks like this:

createTask1.TaskProperties.ExtendedProperties["ColumnName"] = this.workflowProperties.Item["ColumnName"].ToString();

But when I set the TaskForm's field to that value, the field isn't actually being populated. Any ideas why I cant do this? Or how to set an Infopath Field with the value I want?

This method DOES work when I want to set a second Task Form's values with values in my workflow. It seems the very first Infopath Form in the chain won't let me set its values through code. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
