That's awesome. And much simpler than what I was thinking. I had completely overlooked the filename in the data connection.

You can setup a dataconnection to query the library where the forms are stored and check exisitng documents.

The user can start a new form or open an existing form from the library. A new form creates a file name when it is submitted to Sharepoint initially, typically a concatenation of some fields. When you open an exisitng form, this name should not change and when submitted again would overwrite and update the existing file. However if the file name changed, then it would create a new file or copy. Like a Save As.

If they opened the one they wanted to use as a template, you would just need to add the functionality to the form to allow them to request a new file name be generated (button). Then instead of overwriting the original they could save a new version with the new information but based on the original.

There are other more advanced methods to abstract the data and create templates but this is the simplest.

Creating a new form instance from the current one

Good Afternoon all,

First off, I'm not completely new to InfoPath, but I am new to the site. Lots of great info! Thanks!

I have an intersting requirement, and I'm just not sure where to start. We are creating a series of forms to track work units by some of our consultants. The example at hand is an "On Site Visit" item, which may have travel and a number of activities and findings associated with the visit.

Since many of the forms submitted will vary by only a few fields (dates and times), my users would like to be able to submit a form, change some values, and be presented with the option of "updating" the current form or "submitting new".

All forms are published to SharePoint Forms Libraries (not Forms Services), and all users have the full client.

I can't find anything to even determine if the current form has been submitted, much less to direct its submission mode. Any help is greatly appreciated.
