You may want to check out Qdabra’s Check In and Out XTP and add it to your InfoPath form - this XTP by the way has the feature which automatically checks out the form once it has been opened by any user, and checks it back in upon submit or form close. We also have a blog tutorial here.

Hope this helps.

Multiple authors or approvers

I have a form that will be filled out by a systems person and submitted to a library. One this is done a workflow notifies 20 users and asks them to fill in their piece of the puzzle. They basically click in an area pertinent to their position (e.g. Network, Help desk, Development) and update a couple of check-boxes and a free text field and then submit their changes. Authors are overwriting each other as items are submitted. Check in and check out would likely solve the problem but some non-technical users are not adopting; others don't check in. I thought I'd send out a workflow task and make it serial, but vacationers hold up this process. I also tried the auto check in and check out method using rules but it is not working for me. Any technical ideas, behavior changes or otherwise are welcome. Thanks!
