So, your validation rule would have the condition that (/dfs:myFields/dfs:dataFields/my:SharePointListItem_RW/my:FiscalYear1SavingSharePercentage + /dfs:myFields/dfs:dataFields/my:SharePointListItem_RW/my:FiscalYear1SavingSharePercentage) ! = 100, I think - why don't you post your form with what you've tried? You can attach it under the Options tab... You'd probably also want to add conditions to the validation that both fields are not blank, to avoid showing the error before the user enters the data.

Hi,

I have been trying to do similar kind of activity.

Scenario: There are two boxes to enter data . ex: 40 in one box and 60 in another box. here i need to check that sum of both boxes should be 100. For this i tried above approach but not succeeded.

my fields xpaths:

first field : - /dfs:myFields/dfs:dataFields/my:SharePointListItem_RW/my:FiscalYear1SavingSharePercentage

Second field :- /dfs:myFields/dfs:dataFields/my:SharePointListItem_RW/my:FY2SavingsSharePercentage

Could you please help me out this.

Note: I am using infopath 2010 designer.

I haven't used email forms much. I don't know if there is a way to entirely block Send - you may want to post a new question on that. I know that with a standard InfoPath form, you can't submit if there are validation errors - which is why I'd suggested validation. But it sounds like it doesn't block emailing.

Ahh, yes I forgot to tell you that small detail.

I have the form published to email recipients. They open up the email, fill out the form, type the email address it goes to and hit "Send". Once the "Send" button is hit is when I get the message I stated above.

So, what are you doing when you get the message? Clicking Submit? Do you have Submit rules set up? Or is this some other button?

Yes yes yes, that worked when the hours equal 40, Thank you! :)

Now, when the total hours DON'T equal 40, I get this message here...

Can I instead, have it say something like "Total Hours do not equal 40", please fix before sending" with an OK button.

Basically people tend to ignore dialog boxes and will just press whatever they need to force a message to go through. My way eliminates this.

Can this be done?

Given the XPaths to your fields:

Hours_Total XPath = /my:myFields/my:Hours/my:Total_Hours/my:Hours_Total

Absence_Total XPath = /my:myFields/my:Absence/my:Absence_Total

I think the correct expressions would be:

Hours_Total

0 != xdMath:Nz(.) + xdMath:Nz(../../../my:Absence/my:Absence_Total)

and

40 != xdMath:Nz(.) + xdMath:Nz(../../../my:Absence/my:Absence_Total)

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Absence_Total

40 != xdMath:Nz(.) + xdMath:Nz(../../my:Hours/my:Total_Hours/my:Hours_Total)

and

0 != xdMath:Nz(.) + xdMath:Nz(../../my:Hours/my:Total_Hours/my:Hours_Total)

The XPaths are relative - so, for Hours_Total, it needs to be "how do I get from here to Absence_Total?" and for Absence_Total, "how do I get from here to Hours_Total?"

One more note:

Even when "Hours_Total" and "Absence_Total" combined total DOES equal 40, they still have a red border around each of them with the same error. I'm sure it's something I'm doing I just don't know what it is.

Sure, here you go...(paths below are from right-clicking on "Absence_Total" and clicking on "Copy XPath". Same with Absence_Total.

Hours_Total XPath = /my:myFields/my:Hours/my:Total_Hours/my:Hours_Total

Absence_Total XPath = /my:myFields/my:Absence/my:Absence_Total

Ok, so I was able to Publish a blank timesheet, which I what I desire. But then, I intentionally left all the Hours and Absent Hours blank so that it wouldn't total 40 and it still let me email the form to myself. Once I received the form, there was a red box around the "Hours_Total" and "Absence_Total" boxes and hovering over them brought up the message I created "Total is not 40 hours".

My goal is to not even allow the form to email unless the total is 40 hours. Can this be done?

The formula on field8 is a victim of a sloppy copy / paste error. :-)

Should be:

0 != xdMath:Nz(.) + xdMath:Nz(../my:field7)

as you suspected...

So much will have to do with the correct XPath for your fields. Can you right click each of them in the data source task pane, and select Copy XPath and paste the XPath into a reply?

I tried copying your code (changing "Field 7" to "Hours_Total" and "Field 8" to "Absence_Total" and I'm sure it's my fault, but it didn't work.

One quick question though...

In field 7 you refer to field 8 and field 8. In field 8 you refer to field 7 and field 8. Is this the way it should be? See below...

For the expressions on Field 7, you have...

0 != xdMath:Nz(.) + xdMath:Nz(../my:field8)

and

40 != xdMath:Nz(.) + xdMath:Nz(../my:field8)

For the expressions on Field 8, you have...

40 != xdMath:Nz(.) + xdMath:Nz(../my:field7)

0 != xdMath:Nz(.) + xdMath:Nz(../my:field8)

Sorry about the large font, I tried to reduce them but there doesn't seem to be a way.
