thanks for your response. Internal versions have now gotten me part-way to the goal. Is it possible to initiate a SharePoint workflow from within an IP form?

This is the first time I have heard of such a creative request! :)

There might be a way using the SharePoint Web Services to do this but it would no doubt require some logic in your form or some kind of workflow logic.

Another idea would just be to display the version number in your form and set it in your form. In other words, don't rely on SharePoint versioning - just create your own.

If all you need to do is look at the version, you can promote this field as a property in your SharePoint library and see the version quickly there and see how many edits the form has.

Just add a majorVersion and minorVersion fields to your form. Increment these based on which button is clicked. Add a calculated value (expression box control if on 2007) to your form that concatenates them with a "." in the middle. You will need to reset the minorVersion when they Submit and when you increment the majorVersion, but easy to do.

Still very new, still asking newbie-type questions, and still hugely appreciative of any and all guidance!

I've got an IP form which is submitted to a sharepoint library. When submitting, I'm using the same name for each form (based on content, no fancy date/time stamps incorporated into the filenames to make them unique), overlaying previously submitted versions of the same named form. This works great.

I've got two ways of submitting the form: one via a 'save' button (which submits the data and keeps the form open for more entry), and one via a 'submit' button (which submits the data and closes the form). This works just fine, too.

I've got versioning turned 'on' in Sharepoint. When I click 'save', I get a new version (major if only major versioning is turned on in Sharepoint, minor if all is turned on). the 'submit' button works the same way.

I need the 'save' button to create a minor version in the form library, and the 'submit' button to create a major version. Is there a way to control the type of version created from within InfoPath?

again, thanks in advance for the support!
