Hoping Patrick can elaborate on how to auto default the skill and skill level for new rows to the one above it.

Thanks for the response. Great tip on defaulting the drop downs to the skill and skill level of the row above. I was hoping to use the multi select box to show the user all of the qualifications for a particular skill and skill level...is that not feasible? For example, if the skill was "Excel" and the level was "Intermediate" I would like to show the user all of the qualifications (about 8) so that they could select them at once. I do like the drop down suggestion as that would be pretty simple to implement...one last question; how would I implement the auto default option you mentioned so the user won't have to select the skill and skill level every time?

thanks,
Doug

Re: interacting with sharepoint list

Hi GolenSKD,

Thanks for your patience. I would use a dropdown for the qualification and force users to pick one. Then put all three dropdowns in a repeating section (or table for better layout). It makes for slightly more user work to add rows but you can auto default the skill and skill level for new rows to the one above it.

No code required. qRules could help you do faster filtering if you have a lot of items. It could also help you synch your form to a ShP list, but I don't think you'll need it here.

interacting with sharepoint list

I have a SharePoint (2007) list that contains columns for "skill", "skill level", "qualification" and "questions". I'm using infoPath 2007 and want to build a form that will allow users to select a skill and skill level, see the associated qualifications and select the qualifications they want to use to build a simple job description form. So, for example, if a user chooses "Excel" and "Intermediate" there might be 6 separate qualifications shown to the user. They may pick 3 qualifications and then look at "Excel" and "Advanced" and choose 3 qualification from that list. Then the user might pick a different skill like "Project Management" and select qualifications...and so on. I am struggling with the correct controls to use in InfoPath 2007 and also with building this list of qualifications. Here is what I have tried so far:

A drop down list for "skill name" and a drop down list for "skill level" then a multi select control (tied to the sharePoint list)with rules/filter to only show the qualifications that match the drop down selections.
Problem: The multi select control keeps any "checked" qualifications as the user selects them and then goes back and changes the "skill name" or "skill level" drop downs...but you lose the skill name associated with the qualification. So in other words, I can get a list of qualifications (in the multi select control) but I wouldn't know what skill those qualifications are associated with.

Questions:
1. Am I using the correct controls?
2. How can I display the list of qualifications to the user with the correct "skill name" associated with the qualification?
3. Eventually I will need to also look back into the sharePoint list and pluck out the "question" associated with the qualification and present that to the user in a separate field...so any ideas there would be appreciated.
4. Can this be done without coding? Would qRules be an option?

Thanks in advance.
