Have you considered using a web service that handles this? Qdabra's Database Accelerator (DBXL) has a web service that allows querying databases. It comes with a Query Builder tool that helps you create strings for filtering, and even sorting. Here's a documentation on how to implement static and dynamic queries using QueryDB, just to have an idea how to set it up and how it works. The document does not have examples of cascading dropdowns but once you've built your data connections and have populated your form with data, setting up cascading dropdowns will really be easy - no need for code!

You can try Qdabra's DBXL for free. Download it here and see if it's what you're looking for. Let us know if you need further help setting it up.

Cheers!

Please help, I'm having trouble with cascading dropdowns in a database form in Infopath 2007

I've been looking around for the stuff on how to create cascading dropdowns in a sql database form on infopath 2007 for the past week and I can't find anything, can somebody please help me. So I have a database form in infopath 2007 connected to a table in sql server 2008. The table has three columns: Utility, Adjustments and Applies to. So my adjustments depend on utility and my "applies to" depends on adjustments. I've looked through many examples, I managed to create cascading dropdown using a regualar blank form, using a .xml file, which I created by copying the utilities, adjustments, etc. into a notepad using an example from one of the posts on msdn. However that form is not connected to anything. So I have a blank form with cascading lists that doesn't connect to any database and a form without cascading dropdowns that connects to a database. I need my form to have cascading dropdowns and the values for those dropdowns have to be coming from a database table. I don't know any coding languages, so I need to be walked through this taking baby steps, telling me exactly what to do (maybe write in Visual Studio) and where to do/write it. Any help would be appreciated. Please help ASAP. Thank you.

P.S. For the blank form with cascading dropdowns, I managed to connect to a database using Tools-> Data Connections-> Add, etc.., however I just can't pull out any data from my table and the filters are not working the form that does get data from the sql server.
