I have a field on my form that serves as timestamp. I am trying to set that field to automatically be assigned the current date & time value (using now() function) everytime a new record is created. I tried using default property but the problem with this approach is this overrides the original value of previous records when I do query. I tried using conditional default values as illustrated here but cannot come up with the right formula.

here's the formula I'm trying to build for the field's default property:

concat(substring(now(), 1, (.="") * string-length(now())), substring(<do nothing>, 1, (not(.="")) * <do nothing>)

What I'm trying to do here is supply the date-time value for the timestamp field when the field is blank (new record) and do nothing otherwise. Or is there a better way of accomplishing this other than using "conditional default values" method?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks
