Although I'm not Clay...

1) remove rule from TAX field

2) set default value of the TAX field to the (../my:SUBTOTAL + ../my:SHIP) * .085 * (../my:TAX_CHOICE = "In WA")

I tried it using the default value for the "TAX" field as (SUBTOTAL + SHIPPING) * TAX RATE. Then set a rule on the drop down list to change the value of the "TAX" field based on the Outside ($0) or Inside (back to field's default) WA selection. If I click away at another field it will not update. I have to add or delete a record to the repeating table for it to update.

I also tried using only rules in the drop down list to populate the "TAX" field based on the selection in the list. Also will not update on the fly.

Are the calculations done using default values? After selecting the dropdown item, what happens if you tab out to another field?

I have a Purchase Order form that I have created and am having some problems with the tax section. I have a repeating table where people enter items w/ cost, quantity, etc. I have subtotal, shipping, tax and grand total fields calculating on the fly as the user enters/deletes items. I have a drop down list next to "TAX:" that allows the user to choose "in WA" or "Outside WA". If the user chooses "Outside WA" it makes the tax "$0" and "Within WA" it calculates state sales tax as: (SUBTOTAL + SHIPPING) * TAX RATE. Anyway, it won't update on the fly when I change from Outside WA to Inside WA and vice versa. I have to add a record before it will update. Any idea on how to get the Tax field to update constantly based on the addition/deletion of items AND the selection in the tax drop down list.
