Our DBXL Web Service supports your scenario today. We have a separate "system" form that keeps assignment information (i.e. the history of your user assignments). Anyway, we can show you a demo if you are interested. We use the taskpane to show workflow status, taxonomy info and history of assignments.

You can also use SharePoint workflows and InfoPath 2007. However, the users will have to go to SharePoint to see history.

If you would like to build this from scratch, I recommend using a database and a separate table with a row for assignment (with columns: ID, assignee, assignedTo, date, time, status). To submit this data will require a separate Web Service to write the values, but you can do it.

Of course, 10 minutes and DBXL and you are done, but if you like to spend lots of time and money, go for it.

try to gauge if this can be done in infopath/sharepoint

basically my overall goal is trying to find the simplest way to do this: (I have never used infopath)

Have two different forms

-pretty simple forms with just a table with drop down menus and editable textboxes as cells

-also ability to for a user to add more rows to the table

These forms will be hosted on a sharepoint website and then I will need the ability for users to send an email of the form they filled out. Finally, I need a master log form that will contain the data from the forms various users submitted, which will also be hosted on the sharepoint site.

My biggest concern is finding a way to let users email their forms to themselves and a way for the master form to read data from the child forms. (use of a database may be an option)

Specific details are not necessary at this time, just looking for some suggestions if this can be done without much trouble in infopath and deployed to the sharepoint site.

Thank You
