You can use the projectname concatenated with the now() function. Now() function gives the current date with time. Also store this value in to a variable called file name and submit the form with this field as the file name and set the file name value only when that field is empty so that when the user updates the record then also it will submit with the actual file name not as a new record.

Guaranteeing a unique file name that can be updated

I'm very new to Infopath and I can't seem to find any step-by-step instructions for newbies to learn correctly so bear with me b'c I've probably missed a critical piece. I have a form that submits a new entry to a Sharepoint form library, works as expected. I have a view on this same form that is read-only so the entry can be reviewed. Now what I need is the ability to update an entry. I'm assuming that my problem is finding a unique file name that's not already used and won't generate a 2nd entry when updating the record. Originally I planned to use the project name plus the date for my filename, however if they update the entry on a different date then it generates a new entry, so using the date in my file name is out. Then I thought I'd use just the project name, but there's the potential for duplicate entries as more users add items. Everything else in the form should have the ability to be updated (requestor, phone number, sponsor name, summary of project) so none of them can be used because of it creating a new record when updated. I've also put in a number generator, but on the submit it just generates a new number with a new entry.

What am I missing here? What do I need to do to be able to update an entry?

The technical details: Infopath 2007, Sharepoint 2007

Thanks,

Karen.
