Ironically, they didn't give me that answer right away. I worked quite a while with two support specialists to try to resolve the problem. Then, when they found out that it couldn't be solved, they claimed it was not a bug, but in there by design. How they said that with a straight face, I'll never know.

The issue is that in order to add a document, you need to perform a "check-out" or "check-in" procedure which requires not only the Add right, but the Edit right. And of course, the Edit right allows users to change existing documents, which is unacceptable for some applications.

I found this link about the subject after I posted; it has some workarounds for the problem:
<br /http://www.infopathdev.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=2161
Re: Error message when submitting form

yup yup, same problem. it works if we disable the full trust option.
does anyone have answer for this?

Re: Error message when submitting form

The sharepoint library is available. The form works great if the security on the sharepoint site is set to "View, insert, edit, delete listings". However, we don't want people to edit or delete, so I went into "Advanced Rights" and selected View Area, View Pages, and Add Items only. Now we get the error message, even though the form gets saved on the sharepoint site.
Re: Error message when submitting form

Hi MicrosoftBob,

OK. Can you check once your sharepoint library path is available or not. May be your sharepoint library is not available for you.
Whichever it gives the sharepoint library path you can copy that path and paste it in new internet explorer. If it works your sharepoint library path is correct.

Re: Error message when submitting form

The form is already set to "Full Trust" and we have it digitally signed with a certificate.

Re: Error message when submitting form

Hi MicrosoftBob Welcome to the Forums,

You cannot submit a form to sharepoint with restricted security. I am working a form that was designed by someone else, but does not appear to be too complex.

The form was working ok, but then we changed the security level on the Sharepoint area. We removed "Edit items" and "Delete items" rights from the users. Now when a user submits a form, they get the below error message. The weird thing is, the form still shows up in the form library. There are two rules being executed prior to the SubmitToSharepoint action, but these just set some properties of data fields. Why does this error occur and how do we get rid of it?

InfoPath cannot submit the form.
An error occurred while the form was being submitted.
The form cannot be submitted to the following location:
( address of sharepoint site here )
The site may be offline, read-only, or otherwise unavailable.
Unspecified error
