The final workaround centered on the CORRECT way to lookup a Parent....I'd chosen the ID as the main lookup field & "checked" name. Well, turns out if you Lookup the ParentList Name as the main field, and "checkbox" ID, the NAME shows up in the "New Item" dropdown, and the Parent ID gets written auto-magically.

So I made a Infopath form with a save button, and a new site page. I put the Child List and the Infopath webpart on it. So the only hassle is wading thru the names when a new item is created. Eh....good enough.

I have 2 lists; ParentList and ChildList. I've created an Infopath form to the ParentList, published, use an Infopath Webpart with the ParentList on the left col and the associated InfoPath Webpart on the right....click select from the ParentList, and the Webpart populates....you can edit & save. Click a New Rec button and the Webpart clears & awaits new data & writes a new rec in the ParentList. I even have a Repeating Section with a CustomField to display any related ChildList entries. Life is good.....

How-the-heck-ever......I can't seem to find a nice way to enter ChildList items. THe default ChildList New Form has a lookup to the ParentList Id, but none of the other ParentList fields that I've checkboxed will show up in the ChildList New Form....only the ID.....so that kinda sucks (It doesn't say "Bill" it says "3")

I've found and developed (read: stolen & modified) great Parent/Child examples for stock Display/New forms in other sites, but they don't seem to work when InfoPath is employed as the interface to a list. So unless some smart person here can link me to a solution, I fear I may have to dump my snazzy infopath form so I can get a meaningful New-Child-That-Associates-with-a-Parent scheme going.

Ideally I'd get a secondary connection on the ParentList Infopath form that'd write to the ChildList. ALternatively I'd settle for a mod to the default ChildList New Item form that shows a Parentlist Name instead of the ID field.

Head bruised from banging on wall..........

lil help?
