"Updating the content type has failed" - standard solutions not working

     Good day,

I have an enterprise scale application that:

    •  Captures employee data from an InfoPath form
      • Form has a SQL Data Connection
      • Form calls UserProfile webservice
      • Form calls web service to get user group information (the web service name escapes me at the moment)
    • Data is delivered to a SharePoint form library
    • Several workflows handle different events when the occur
    • Several columns are promoted for use in the library list
    • Several views are created to handle the list and show information in different ways
    • This design is primarily no-code

Starting a few weeks ago, I began getting the message that "Updating the content type failed" during submission of the form from InfoPath 2010

    I have ruled out

    • Property promotion
      • This seems to be the common answer when discussing this particular error
      • I mad a copy of the entire library then removed all property promotion
      • No change
    • Workflows
      • I removed all workflows in the copy of the library
      • No change
    • Fiddler
      • I fiddled the submit and came up with the following details
      • The submit dies during communication with Lists.asmx
        • Exception of type 'Microsoft.SharePoint.SoapServer.SoapServerException' was thrown
        • Object reference not set to an instance of an object
      • I have iterated through the fields both in the list and in the form, nothing seems out of place

    Thanks for your help!

    Hi Rob,

There are some bugs in the content type publish code that may be fixed. Can you verify that all cumulative updates have been applied?

You also might try publishing it to a separate site.
