Saving vs Submitting Browser Form with Workflows

    All,

I have a browser based form in a 2010 form library. I have a need to allow users to edit the items and some of these fields are promoted to the library as columns in the list. I created a filename field that is set the first time an item is submitted and this works and then when the item is edited, I see that the filename is set and is correct. The submit is done with rules and this works fine. The main issue is that if a user edits the item and then submits the form, it will change the ID which leads me to believe it is actually creating a new item and then hiding the one that was edited. The beauty of submit is that this closes the form! I like that! However, this does not fire a workflow designed to run when an item is edited. My guess is that it is technically a new item. Now, if instead, a user clicks the save button, the item is saved and the metadata updated and the workflow runs! Yippee!! However, the form does not close until the close button is clicked. This leads to a bad user experience having to click to save and then click to close. I need the updating ability of the save button and the automatic closing feature of the submit button.

    Any thoughts are appreciated!

Set the form name as a calculated value, which you have probably done, but you also have to set the SharePoint Library to overwrite forms with the existing names. And if you turn on versioning on your library you keep each of the form as it is saved.

Then you set an action on your submit button that submits the form to the library and closes the form all in one go!
