How to change drop-down selection behavior?

I have several drop-down buttons in a Web form, all identically created, but different fields. The values are 01, 02, 03...12. My client prefers to tab through fields; not point and click, but when they tab to some of the fields and type "07" (for example), they get "01." Type "0" or "07" again and they get "02." This is standard behavior for State drop-down fields on my banking site. I have to type "T" twice to get to Texas (results for "T" cycle through all options starting with "T" - Tennessee, then Texas). Sometimes I can get one of these fields to act correctly ("07" produces "07" the first time), but when I add rules to it (let's say to go an do something else based on the selection "07") and republish, then the behavior reverts to cycling through all the "0" 's, one at a time. Two of my fields (with rules) work as I desire so I know it is possible, but duplicating this behavior on purpose has been illusive. Any ideas? BTW - not a problem with Preview or with published application-based forms.

Thanks for the interesting post. I suppose you could have a text field that takes just two characters and auto-moves to next field when they are typed.

    I'm attaching a sample form.

Thanks, I could do that (and just might). I have a sample of the drop-down acting as I'd like, but can't figure out what strange combination of situations exist for it to do so. Sometimes easiest is best, but it is odd that it "can" work as desired, just who knows why!  :o)
