German Umlaut character in secondary data connection gets replaced with ??

    Hi,

I have recently migrated a SharePoint site from 2007 to 2010 which contains a forms library with an InfoPath 2007 filler form that populates (via secondary data connection) a field with the filtered contents of a column in another list on the same site. The source column contains (in a few cases) special characters such as the German Umlaut. In SharePoint 2007, the data is retrieved without any changes and the Umlaut is properly represented in the InfoPath field, but in Sharepoint 2010, the Umlaut is replaced with two question marks.

SharePoint seems to be unaffected as the Umlaut is present in the list column in both systems, only InfoPath seems to behave differently and we do not use the form service nor have I changed the version of the form or modified the Infopath client software.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what a solution may be?

    Thanks.

    -Don
