InfoPath Errors for End User - Need ideas

    Hey All

Hoping someone can help me out with some issues I have been experiencing with InfoPath 2010.

First my Setup: We are running SharePoint 2010 over 3 servers (Web front end, Index Server and Database Server) I am developing forms with InfoPath Designer 2010 and using SharePoint Designer 2010 for Workflow design.

I have created a Staff Appraisal form for the College which I work in, which includes simple text fields (multiple lines), check boxes, radio buttons etc - Nothing fancy. The only fancy (if you can call it that) is utilising the UserProfileService Web Service to query Active Directory to get the current users name, email and Phone Number. Behind the scenes, I have a number of workflows firing off when certain fields are used or contain certain information, which as far as I can tell are working fine.

I did extensive testing on all of the processes to ensure everything was working correctly, which worked 100% for myself (Admin) and the department (general user with contribute rights). But unfortunately when we deployed this to the College, something is going wrong and I am at a loss as to what it is.

Some users have been reporting this issue: One one of the pages, the user hits the next page button (which has a rule to change the view) and seems to get this error message: "There has been an error while loading the form. A required resource could not be downloaded. To try and resume the download, refresh the page." Strangely it always seems to be the same button and the users always claim that they have spent about 2 hours filling in the form. The button code simply changes the view so shouldn't really cause and issue. The fields on that view also don't call or query any information, so shouldn't kill the form. Of course our users then panic and hit F5 and lose all of their data. - In order to fix this issue I have placed a save progress button on each view with a simply SharePoint Submit, to at least save the data so far, but users being users, don't read the help or don't see the button and bam lose everything. My thoughts are maybe something is timing out? Either the form or SharePoint and maybe the as they are entering lots of data into text field prior to this point, the form is getting overloaded and just gets pushed over the edge. I jumped into Central Admin and application management and took a look at the timeout settings, I increased everything by double, but we are still getting the same result. It is a bit strange that it keeps happening at the same point every time though?!?!? Ideas most welcome for this one as the save option doesn't seem to be working effectively.

Although this next issue is more an inconvenience than a huge issue, the UserProfileService Web Service is also not running when we access the form externally through https:// Our IT tech said that maybe it was because InfoPath was combining internal and external data and this might throw the certificate out and cause that error. As far as I can see on the form, it stops the fields from auto filling in. This is less of a problem if the form has been started inside the college and someone comes back to update it later, but if the end users starts the form outside the College, they will need to fill the data in manually. Now for you or me, yeah a bit annoying, but simple just to type some basic details in. For HR this is HUGE and needs to be fixed asap!! If anyone has any ideas of why this is happening or what I should be looking at, again I would be greatly happy. I can't see anything within Central Admin and my Server knowledge is quite limited, so any walkthroughs or descriptive answers would be very useful.

     Cheers

Hi - can you repro the issue with changing the views and the timeout? If you can, you'd be able to check the log files for around when it happens, maybe that would have some info that would help you gain some insight.

As to your second issue - when you say not running - what do you mean? Is there an error? Or it just doesn't return any data? Can you drag the data source onto the form and then try it (off the network, using the form as if you are an external user) to see if any data is returned?

Sorry - I know these aren't actually answers to your questions - but since I don't know the answer, I thought I might try to help you troubleshoot.

    Hey Hilary

Sorry I should have been a bit more specific with my outline

I have not been able to reproduce the error, by making a new form or by running through the current deployment with different users and neither have my colleagues.  It seems that everyone who has reported this issue gets it with the same button, but I have yet to see the error myself in person.  I did get screenshots of the error message, but that is about it.  In looking in the Event viewer, I am not seeing the issue, but to be honest the users don't seem to be able to tell me what day, time they are getting the problems,  Looking through the logs, I am not seeing anything that jumps out to me, so that one is a bit of a mystery at the moment.

As to the External Webservice issue, users get a message saying that there has been an error with the form:

An error occurred querying a data source.

Click OK to resume filling out the form. You may want to check your form data for errors.

    And here are the Details:

You do not have permissions to access a Web service that provides data required for this form to function correctly.
An entry has been added to the Windows event log of the server.
    Log ID:5566
    Correlation ID:0d32063a-946c-4932-8473-9ffa7b81c21f

As mentioned the only webservice the form is using on Startup is the UserProfileServices and when I removed this from the form, the error is no longer present.

From the log there is obviously something going on with external permissions (5566), but I am not really sure where I should be looking in order to fix the issue.

    Regards

    Ryan
