    Autopopulate field from Dropdown List

     Hi,

I've successfully created a cascading dropdown field that imports filtered data from another SharePoint list. What I really want to do is have it auto populate another field or the current dropdown with the filtered data because it will always be a single piece of data, not multiple lines. There is no need for choosing. I'm having a brain cramp on this one. Thanks in advance.

    I'm not sure I understand...

If you understand and have set up cascading dropdowns, then the simpler scenario is a single dropdown setting the value of a text box, for example. So instead of

    Dropdown > Dropdown

    You have:

    Dropdown >Text box

In both cases the first dropdown contains rules that trigger the next step.

Maybe attach the form or some screenshots?

Re: Autopopulate text field with data from another list - filtered lookup

     Hi ErnstoM,

I don't think I explained this one very well! Sorry.

Here is what I want to do:

When a new item is created in a child list I want a filtered text field to populate with the data from a field in the parent item. I'm using a web service data connection to bring the parent data over with a filter.

    Here is what I have:

I created a lookup field in my child list that grabs filtered data from the parent list. It seems pretty obvious that lookup fields have to be drop down controls. The filtering is only giving me one line of data to choose from which is sort of what I want. I don't want to be able to choose multiple entries. I would like the drop down to actually auto populate the field with the filtered line of data, not just populate the line that I can choose it as an option. The absolute best option would be to bypass the dropdown all together and just populate a text field, however when I tried that the form wouldn't synch with the SharePoint server. Hopefully I explained it a little better!! I changed the Title to make it more descriptive too! Is this even possible? Thanks!

So I think what you're saying is that the data connection is returning one row with field1, field2, field3. And what you want is a dropdown in the form that shows these three as the options within the dropdown?

Again, if all you want is:

    Ghoztrider:

a filtered text field to populate with the data from a field in the parent item

Then I still don't understand the need for a dropdown. Some simple rules will allow you to set the value of a field in the main data source.

(Why are you using a web service, by the way? Isn't this available out of the box in InfoPath by setting the QueryFields before calling the data connection?)

So after reading about Query fields in your response I did some research and testing and figured out how to achieve the desired result I wanted, so Thank you for inadvertently giving me another option. I still would like to be able to write back to the parent "Req Number" from the child form if you have any suggestions. Thanks.
