Lost with no path in sight

Hi, I'm really new to InfoPath with a background on VB.NET. I would like to find a proper way to create form where we enter our time sheets by order we work on, thats my assignment at my job that I'm avoiding to use VB.net to accomplish it.

I need a form that will get the Username (already done it by using the UserName() function) I need to: List the order numbers based on the user logged on, these orders will be listed on a drop down list, based on the order (the user is assigned to) picked the other fields will be populated, such as customer_name, date, etc...

These values are on a list on our Share Point portal and I need to use this data to help the others on my team to populate their time sheets.

After the data is selected users will enter the amount of time by day on separated fields and this has to be stored by user/week at the portal to be reviewed later by our management.

Order         Customer Date assigned Mon, Tue, Wed ...

It looks simple but I never done any work on InfoPath and would like to have any help pointing me to some tutorial where I could follow and grow from that.

    Any help is appreciated,

    Kerb

    Hi,

So you are trying to create an InfoPath timesheet that will be created weekly?  I guess my other question would be...are your users going to fill out their own timesheets or is this a collaborative timesheet?

In anycase to get your feet wet on InfoPath...just surfing around this site has been extremely helpful for me.

Based on the description of what you are trying to accomplish, it sounds like you need to become familiar with InfoPath Data Connections, Web-Services (such as GetUserProfile), and repeating tables.  I think to really give you a nice walking start, I would check out the "Humble Tribute to the Leave Form" article.  It is a five part how-to for creating an InfoPath Leave form.  It hits several areas I think you will benefit greatly on.  I also enjoyed it because the author made it Simpsons themed so it is just a straight boring read.

    The official Microsoft help links:

    http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/infopath-help/add-a-data-connection-to-a-sharepoint-document-library-or-list-HP010093160.aspx

    What I have found:

    http://www.codeproject.com/Articles/36913/How-to-add-a-SharePoint-list-data-connection-to-an (regarding Data Connections)

http://sharepointmagazine.net/articles/a-humble-tribute-to-the-leave-form-part-5 ( the leave form article)

I hope this helps.  And good luck!

    Hi khaliraja ,

thank you for your post, I will really use this inforamation and yes I'm doing a weeklly time sheet to be filled out by users individually and send the data to a Share Point list (as data) and to a share point library as Forms (with individual names and dates)

I now need to use VB.NET to pass and recieve values from the forms for calculation and dates manipulations but it's geeting difficult, I can send data to the Form but I'm having a hard time getting data from the form's field into my VB code to maniuplate and then send it back to the form :)

thanks again for your help :).

    Best,

I'm glad you can make good use of the information.

As for your VB.NET side...If you are trying to do calculations  and date manipulations, InfoPath has a pretty good collection of formulas that may already meet your needs without having to write any coding (or very little).  Are the calculations based on information from another database?  If so...try to establish a data connection to query the information from the form, do the calculations on the form, then you can save the record on a doc library.

If using code is the only way...there is a blog in this site that really helped me out:

    http://www.infopathdev.com/blogs/matt/archive/2006/02/02/Add-SharePoint-List-Items-with-InfoPath.aspx

I also found one on the MSDN blogs:

    http://blogs.msdn.com/b/infopath/archive/2007/03/26/submitting-to-a-sharepoint-list.aspx

I have actually used this solution a couple of times at work for two different InfoPath forms.  Only thing is that these solutions are so you can create items from InfoPath to a SharePoint list.  I know it isn't exactly what you were looking for, but I think it will help you get an idea of how you can use InfoPath to meet your needs....if anything it is always fun to learn something new :-)

Lastly I found this on MSDN the other day when I was looking for something else.  I'm pretty sure you can use it:

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/gg621243

The exercise is about creating a Timesheet using InfoPath (Sounds familiar).

Good Luck!  If I run into anything else I'll be sure to post it for you.
