n00b question - selecting and storing a value from a repeating table

    Infopath 2007/SQL 2008 R2/stand alone no Sharepoint/NOT a browser form - using Infopath filler

Header/Detail situation.  2 databases.  Keyed off an integer.

Making an edit form.  If they just sort on the control or other numbers and bring up one record then everything is fine.  But if they don't know what record they want then things get fun.  I made a 2 stage form where there are parameters to search on.. hit run query and  a list of record headers comes up.  A button in front of each one.  This is what is supposed to happen.  Choose the record you want, hit the button and the view switches and prepops the record you want into the edit form.  I have a 'hidden' field and an on click rule that 'in theory' sets the value of the hidden field to the control number.  Then another rule that switches the view.  And other rule that sets the control number from the hidden field.

The first part works... but when I choose a record and hit the button the view switches and the first header (from the previous query) loads and all of the details from all the query results load with it.

How do I tell what is being stored in that field?  I have a number of ideas as to what could be wrong.. but I don't know how to troubleshoot and find the actual fail point.

I have spent the last 4 days reading web sites and forum posts... I'm obviously missing something really stupid simple

    Hi 3steps,

Wow, you spent 4 days on it. You should have just installed our DBXL Web service and you would be up and running in 40 minutes. We developed it back in 2005 because of issues like this with querying XML and also with submitting to SQL. One of the big issues you have with the out-of-box support is that the data is not stored as XML (in addition to the SQL rowsets). That means when it changes (as invariably it will), you have some significant problems. DBXL gets around this by providing a loosely coupled framework *and* it stores the XML as a blob for 100% fidelity. Separate document types (XSNs) can be mapped to the same table structure (which means side-by-side versioning will also work). Free trial available and we guarantee it will save you time and money.

Let me know if you want a demo. Bottom line: InfoPath out-of-box is missing the Web service that would make it a SOA app.
