Trying to allow date picker and currency controls to accept text values as well.  For example, user could set a control to "null", triggering a drop-down list of reasons why he does not have the information.  These values get pushed back to a database.  Any ideas are greatly appreciated!

Well, if your form is database bound (which I'm assuming it is - unless you are using a different approach to submit the data to a DB?) there will be data validation on those currency and date fields based on the data type in the database - which, in my opinion, is a good thing.

Rather than mix data types, why not have an additional field for the reason why a field is blank?

It is database bound; that validation is certainly a good thing!  Just exploring some different options because the number of records we're working with originally exceeds 2,000.
