Populate multiple-selection list box in detail with data from other details of the same master

    Hi.

I'm relatively new to Infopath form design so I come here to seek some help :) I want to populate a multiple-selection list box in a detail with data from a field in other details of the same master. I hope that this is achievable in some way and without using a secondary data source or code. The form template is being published to email and has "Restricted" security level.

To give a real life example:

Each detail contains a registered computer software. The other details might then select that they are "dependent" on other software to work properly by selecting those in a multiple-selection list box. In my head it sounds simple, but as far as I have experimented with different solutions it is harder than it seems, but then again, I'm relatively new to this and therefor seek help here.

I have attached a basic sample test form template which may help you better understand what I am trying to do.

    Edit: I'm using Infopath 2010

    Hi RogerGH and welcome!

Thanks for uploading your XSN. I took a look at it. I think the problem is your schema. field5 should not be repeating. Instead, add a group4 under group3 and then put field5 under that. Group4 should be marked as repeating. Then, add an OnChange rule to each of field1, field2, field3, and field4 that sets the appropriate Group4 value. You'll need to hardcode the number: group4[1], group4[2], etc. in the xpath you use to set the value, but it should be easy to do. More generically, you could set up a copytable command using Qdabra's qRules. If you do that, you may want to change group3 to not be a child of group2.

Best of luck with your mission,

    P

Hi. Thanks for the replying so quickly.

I'm not sure if I understand how this works though. Here are some details after trying it out:

    - The multiple-selection list box (bound to field5) gets a warning when it is not a repeating field.

    - field2, field3 and field4 are irrelevant to what I want to do (I just didn't remove them when I created the master/detail)

    - I know how to use rules to set values to some extent, but I'm not sure what you mean with "setting the appropriate group4 value" and "You'll need to hardcode the number..." parts. And where should the multiple-selection list box get its values?

    - I have uploaded an updated version of the example template with a filled form to better explain what I'm trying to achieve.
