    Newbie question(s)

    Hi,
Brand new to Infopath. Am using 2003.
I am looking at building a help desk request form... here is what I have achieved so far...

Created a new form. On the form are 2 dropdown lists that are populated from sharepoint (MOSS 2007) lists.
I have published the new form to a forms library on MOSS.
I have created a web service (vb.net) that takes the form values and puts them into a SQL (2005) database.

Now I want to add code to the webservice so that it emails the help desk to let them know a job has been submitted.
I have no problem creating this code but what I'd like to do would be to have a second form where the help desk would assign a technician and add any comments.
The email from the web service would contain a link to this second form and the second form would be pre-populated with info submitted with the first form.

Is this possible with infopath? Up till now I've been using an email (xml attached) behaviour when submitting the form.
Obviously I'd need to refer to some unique ID I create when inserting the data from the first form... but can I populate fields on form2 based on a SELECT behind form2?

In a web page scenario it would simply be code behind. Something like txtname.value = mydatareader("name")

Hopefully you cann understand what I'm trying to achieve here.
    Many thanks
    Jay

You could programatically generate the XML for the second form -- where will you be storing the form? SharePoint? The link would point to your generated XML -- be sure to include the processing instructions so that the XML opens with the correct template. When you generate the XML for the second form, you could get the info from SQL from your first form, right? I mean, since your web service has already submitted the first form's data to SQL?

If I could get the automated email to point to an infopath template then I should be able to populate the first half of the template with data from SQL meaning the help desk operative could complete the remainder of the form and submit it.... shouldn't I?

Only problem is, as I've been having a play trying to achieve this I keep getting tripped up by errors that talk of using data connections to submit but are meant for retrieval and that sort of thing.
Having an asp.net/sql background I'm very used to populating (and saving) data from DBs into web forms but am struggling a little with infopath.
