Change a control to "cannot be blank" at runtime?

I'm looking for a way to programatically (any language) set a control/Data source node (text box to be specific) to be "cannot be blank" at runtime.

There are a number of field that need to be filled in, but each one is conditional on a drop down list, and if a non-default value in the drop down-list is selected then a value must be entered in the associated text box.

Any suggestions on this would be much appreciated!

    thanks

What you are looking for is custom data validation.

In the Text Box Properties dialog box, click Data Validation. Here you can create conditions such that: If the text box is blank, and the drop-down list is not X, then provide an error which says "Box must be filled in".
