    new datasource without connection

    Hi,

I would like to add another datasource to my form to store some temporary data for use in other fields.  How can I do this?  I can add an XML doc but it is read-only :(

    Hi,

You can add a new data connection to the form using xml. If you want to modify the existing one, then open that xsd and change according to your requirement.

    Hi,

I need to be able to read and write to the xml data connection at runtime, can I do that?

Yes you certainly can.  As you've discovered, it's a bit more of a production to modify the structure of an XML data source, but an XML data source is a great place to store and retrieve data that you don't want to store in your main data source.

Can you point me to any tutorials on how to acheive this?  I am fairly new to infopath development and do not see how to add a two-way XML data source.

    Thanks.

I don't know of any tutorials, but it's really not that complicated.  Just create an XML file with the structure that you would like to have, and import it as a "Receive data" data source in Tools->Data Connections.  Then use the usual methods (rules/controls/code) to set and receive data from this data source, just like you would with the main data source.  Are you getting errors or something when you try to do that?

There are a few limitations to having your data in a secondary source.  For example, it will not be saved when the form is saved, and there is not a built-in feature for users to add and remove rows from repeating sections/tables in a secondary source.

    Hi Jimmy,

I managed to get away without needing it afterall.  Thanks anyway.
