InfoPath Dev

I'd like to use infopath to collect information from machines which are not connected to our corporate network. 

These machines will be using sql express (2005) and infopath 2007. 

I'd like to capture the machine name when a form is opened and change the data connection to point to the instance of sql on that person's machine - is this possible?

You want to have your connection be dynamic?

This is not possible with the standard connectivity.  However there are some other options such as using web services or code.
