Submitting to a webservice and retrieving the returned value (IP2003)

    Hey all,

I wrote a custom web service, which handles and consumes form submissions.  It works great.

What i'd like to be able to do now, is when a form is submitted, it displays a message that is returned from the web service.
(I send in the whole document, it's proccessed and then the result is posted back to the client form)

Is this possible to do using regular 2003 without any of the Dev packs on it and working with visual studio?

     Thanks,

    Dan

    Hi Dan and welcome,

Yes, you can write some code to get the return value and display that, or you can do something clever and use a Retrieve Data Connection to submit part of the data. The retrieve data connection would be called first and it would give you a unique "handle" to the data. Then, use this handle to do the submit. Finally, call another retrieve data connection to verify that the handle's submit succeeded. Complex, and requires two retrieve web methods, but you can do it all without code. Bon appetit!

    Hey Patrick,

thanks for your quick reply, I had actually started down that path, and got discouraged.  When i set up a 'recieve' data connection that pulls posts the information, and then returns back the value, I run into an issue where I can't execute the 'set sample value' part of the wizard to test for the value coming back in.

My webservice is looking for:  ByVal txtXML As XmlDocument
Which is the entire form of the submission.  I'm currently sending the entire file into the web service.

While i'm still a bit newbish when it comes to this software, what would be the best way to handle this type of submission as a 'sample value'.

I've tried capturing any submission thru, and returning the value i want in the webservice, but it has to go thru as an xml document, and the test fails.  What would be an easy way to send thru a value that pretends to be an xml document.

But I follow where you're going with your comment, but i can't figure out how to setup the recieve data connection.

     ~Dan
