So you are saying on a new blank form, the first time you use the drop down control, if you scroll down to far then it does not work. However if you use one of the first one hundred the first time you open the form it does work? Or is this happening when you try to use the dropdown a second time?
Are you able to scroll through all 8962 item numbers in your drop down? It may have to do with the performance on the drop down this would be a pretty big list, especially if it includes description and price. Is your main data source an Access Query too?
If you want to reduce the number or items you could look at the Database Accelerator and Web services. Qdabra Database Accelerator Suite Version 2.1 - Developer With DBXL you could query your list so that you could load a shorter list of items.
If these increase numerically it may have something to do with the number of characters.
I would first rule out that it is not an issue where the items are blank or their is a data issue. I would create another view and drag the secondary data connection on to it so that you can see all of the data the drop down is using to verify it is not a data issue. Another thing is to add another action to your dropdown which is a message or expression with the values that will pop up so you know it is triggering.
Let me know more info and maybe I can help you further. You could probably attach some screen shots.
