Help with submiting to a database!!!

    Hi to all,
I'm a SQL DBA and I'm really new to InfoPath. I'm trying to create a form wich will get data from a SQL database and also submit new data to the database with the info the user typed.
I managed to populate some field with records from a table but when I add a button to configure the submit to database option, the option to select a database is not there. I can submit to email, sharepoint, etc...but not database.
I have read a lot of how to submit to a database but I can't try it because I can't even select a database conection to submit.

Please, I need help on this.

    Hi Racosta,

When u design a new form, select the "New from data Connection" option.
    U get 2 options 1)Database 2) WebService

Select Database and finish selecting the specific database in the wizard.

In the datasource task pane, select the query fields and datafields and drop them to the form.

U have 2 buttons in the form
    New Record and Run Query.

To have the submit button on ur form, add a button and in the button properties dialog, select the Action as "Submit".

    Regards,
    Abhishek

Thank you very much. And now one last question.
I need to populate to text fields queried from SQL tables. I have managed to do this adding a Run Query Button, but i need no user intervention. Is there any way to query the table and fill the text box at startup?

Yes, go to Tools::Form Options. Then in the Open and Save tab there is a button to set Rules on open / onLoad. In there you can set a rule to query a data connection and then add other rules to set field values based on data you query.

    Hi Ricosta,

I had actually performed the steps that you had suggested, however, I still do not see the "database" option to select. I see every other option except database.

    Your thoughts!

    Mark,
Lets go over this once more.
    - You open the infopath application.
    - On the initial splash screen, you select 'Design a form'
    - You should come up with a blank page with a side bar titled 'Design a form'
    - On the sidebar, select 'New from data connection...'
(You can actually select other options and add data connections later but this may be the easiest)
    - You should see the first pop-up box for the 'Data connection wizard'
    - There will be two options (radio btns) "Database (microsoft SQL server or Microsoft Office Access only)" and "Web service"
    - You select Database option and press Next.
    - Next step will have a button in the top right hand corner that says "Select Database...". Click on it.
    - The "Select data source" box will come up. Dbl-Clk on "+New Sql Server connection"
    - You will get the "Data connection wizard" pop-up.

You should be able to take it from there. If you dont see any of these, these something seriously wrong with your installation.

    Hi Abhishek,

Actually, I had performed your steps 3 times and still could not find the database option. I may have a problem with my install. I will attempt to reinstall and try again.

    Thanks for your advice,

    Mark

    Mark -
Does your table in the database you are submitting to have a primary key defined? If there is no primary key you will not see the database as a submit to option. Hope that helps.
