problems populating drop down list box

I have been using Infopath to Submit various kinds of data to my Access DB. Now I am trying to submit further data to a new table along with the ID number from an already populated AND related table as well, by using a drop down list box. Thus the user should see and choose between names in a drop down list box, while they in reality submit an ID number to the new table.
My experience tells me that my setup is correct both in Access and Infopath, yet my main data connection (including both tables involved) does not populate my drop down list box, when I open the template to test it.

I can populate my drop down list box, by the use of an identical secondary data connection, but this it not desirable. And while a secondary data connection will populate my drop down list box, the chosen name (ID number) disapears when I press the submit button, thus making Infopath respond with an error notification.

Am I doing something wrong, is this a known problem or do I need an update for my version of Infopath? None of my books on Infopath take up this problem.

Hope somebody knows better than me.

    Hi Rasmus,

Welcome to our site. To populate the dropdown with the options you have to use the secondary datasource. Your MainDOM is only going to list the selected value from the linked table for the given node. I have two questions to try to help figure out what is happening:
    1) Why is it not desirable to use a secondard data connection to populate the dropdown?
    2) what do you mean when you say that the chosen name (ID number) disappears when you press the submit button?

    Thank you,
    Shiraz
