select data by check box and copy it to a list

I think this is possible, but I can't crack it.

I want to have a view of nothing but diagnoses listed in a table where each line has a checkbox or some other selector. When I check the box, I want that selected diagnosis to be copied to my main form to a simple [short] list.

I tried to use a rule to do this, but I can't get this function to append or add another selected diagnosis to my short list on the main form. It will only replace the first entry I selected from the diagnosis table. How do I get it so that multiple selections show up on my list.

    Hi Larry,

Are you using a single form with multiple views? You can do this pretty easily with a single form and multiple views. The inital page your user would open would be the first view of the form where they would select their diagnoses. Then, when they have made all their selections, they would click on a submit button that would open a 2nd view of the form, but only displaying the selections they had selected on the previous page.

One way to make this work would be to make all the selections on the first view check boxes, but make them Text(String) check boxes (the default is boolean (True/False)). Then in the area where it says "When Value Checked" you would put the diagnoses that this check box corresponds to on the form. When the user makes selections in the check boxes, those values (diagnoses) are available to display or not display in the next view (or other views) in the same form. In other views you can then display the value of the selection in a text box or an expression box AND here you create a rule that says to hide the control if the value is blank (that the user didn't select it on the previous view).

    Make sense?

If you want the list to be managable, you can create a list using a secondary data source.

That's great. I never thought of that. I'll give it a try.

    Thanks a lot. That's a big help.

Re: select data by check box and copy it to a list

I got this to work...kind of. On one view I have my diagnoses listed with check boxes. In my text box on the next view I have an expression to filter from that group of checkboxes all the values that are not blank [or not checked]. The only problem left is that the text strings values that I assinged to the check controls place themselve one after the other in the text box, instead of on seperate lines like I want.

Can I put an XPATH command after my function for "newline" or something like that. I even tried it with "allow paragraph breaks" but then it reserves a line for each check box control in the parent group. I just want those values that have been checked to copy themselves onto a seperate line in my text box.

    I'm so close.....any help.

    Hi Larry,

I replied to your email and attached the sample IP form I worked on to figure this out. I was using a seperate text box (you could also use the expression box if you want) for each check box on the first view, so I didn't have a problem with it not displaying on seperate lines.

    Hope that helps
