Infopath auto populate columns using calculated default value.

Hello everyone, I have an info path form with three columns. I am trying to to populate two columns based on the selection in the drop down column which is lookup to a different list. All three columns data is saved in the same list. I have used default value method to calculate and populate the data but its taking too long to open the form as there are 1500 items in the list. I tried creating a SharePoint list data connection by implementing the same process(calculated default value) and unchecked "automatically retrieve data when the form is opened" but that only helps me opening the form quickly but not loading the data. I also tried creating a rule on the lookup column to set the other two fields with the value but that only populates one particular value in the other two columns even I change the value in the drop down field and if try to implement a condition by matching ID it turns into default value calculated method slowing down the form. Any ideas this can be done a different way or a fix for my problem. Thanks, Chand

So even without the default is the form slow to load? I'm guessing you are using this other list to provide values to your dropdown? Or is that not the case?

Without a default value the form loads fast but I am not able to populate values in the two fields when I select an item in the drop down field. Yes I am using the other list to populate the values in the form.

So, it sounds like you have a different data connection for the dropdown items. If so, you could just query for the data you need after the user makes each dropdown selection and use rules to set the fields instead of using defaults. You'd have to run the query for each row once the user selects a dropdown value, but that would limit the data load.

Yes there is a system generated data connection by info path for the lookup field. I tried implementing Action rule on the lookup field using "set a field" action to push a value onto the other fields based on the selection in lookup field but it only shows only one particular value in two fields for all selections in the lookup field. The two fields don't update their values according to changes made in the lookup field. Am I missing something here ?

I got it figured, I added a rule to query data connection before the the rule that sets the field with a condition that ID of this value matches the lookup field value. Now the form opens fast and queries for the data when users selects an item in the look up field. However I have a new issue, one of the field that populates gives me an error saying only positive integers accepted, any insights on this please

Is this a SharePoint List form? Is the field you are setting a lookup type? They need to be set to the item's ID usually. Otherwise, I'd just assume something is awry in the data types in your main schema.

Yes it is a SharePoint list form and the field is a lookup type. I checked the text box properties for this field the value is set to ID and display name is set to Title. Is there something I need to change?

When you set the value, do you set it to the ID? That's what it needs to be set to.

Yes the value is set to d:ID and the display name is set d:Unit(I want to display unit name)

Re: Infopath auto populate columns using calculated default value.

I found work around, I have created two text fields for the fields I wanted to populate instead of drop down boxes. I have created a new data connection and queried that data connection with rules set to populate these two fields when I make a selection in the first lookup field. But I am still interested to know the reason and a solution for that problem.

I wasn't referring to the value / display of the control, but the formula you were using to set the value of the field - were you setting it to an ID or to a text value?

I am checking of this value to the ID of the main lookup column. Here is my formula "Title[ID = Full_x0020_Name]". Title is the column with data and Full Name is the primary lookup field.

What I am trying to tell you is that the field you are setting, which is a lookup, must be set to the ID of the lookup item.
