Is there any way to edit the Main Data Connection/Source so that it does not load data when the form is opened?

I have a SharePoint Online list that may eventually have up to 14k items (I just work here). Users only have to view/edit a small subset of these items. I have an InfoPath form that allows multiple item editing and has logic when the form opens to filter the data source to show only the items the user needs to view and edit. It appears the form automatically retrieves data when the form is opened, resulting in the error "The attempted operation is prohibited because it exceeds the list view threshold enforced by the administrator."

There is only one view for the list and it is set to return less than 4k items. It appears the views are irrelevant in this situation and InfoPath is respecting the list view threshold. Because this is SharePoint Online, I cannot increase the threshold.

Is there any way to edit the Main Data Connection/Source so that it does not load data when the form is opened?

I have indexed some of the columns, specifically the ones the form queries against for filtering, within the list and the form is working.
