Hi - for check out, the rule in my blog post is in the form load rules. It sets the pageUrl query field to the URL for the item and executes the query. On submit, I'm again setting some query fields and executing the query. You can experiment with these data connections by dragging them onto the form and adding a button that queries the data connection, then try setting the query fields manually and clicking the button to see if your file is getting checked in or out.
