    Conditional Filtering Possible?

I have a form library to collect and process new job postings;  All postings have unique IDs so HR can track applicant details and other HR related items.  Once a job post Status is set to "Open Position" a new item is created in a separate list until the position is filled or closed.  Sometimes a department will create multiple positions that are virtually identical less the unique ID.  HR would like only 1 of these records to show in this list at a time... when that position is filled they wish the next to present itself.

I'm trying to figure out the best and most efficient way to work this out and don't know if I'm over thinking the obvious but I can't figure out how to do this conditionally to filter all but one so I'm trying to get creative would like to know if there is an easy way to get this done?

I was thinking of adding an additional field with a count (i.e. 1, 2, 3, etc.) for the positions that have duplicate entries to show them one after the other as status changes by a condition, workflow or manually by HR.

The requirements from HR are that Department, Job Title and Status all have to be identical for them to be considered a duplicate at this point.  So I'm currently thinking I need have the Status field updated with a rule when one position with those 3 matching fields is filled, so on submit it will update the next record in line to Open Position.  I can't figure out how to get it to reference the "next in line" or if this is even the best way to go.

Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated!

    Thank you!

    Hi Pam,

I'm attaching a 2010 sample that shows how to set a dropdown to default to the next "not filled" job. Hopefully, this will give you some ideas.

    Good luck!

Thank you for your sample it did give me ideas.  Now I can't seem to figure out how to apply them!  I'm trying to get a field within the form to be set to "duplicate" if it sees any matching items (records with identical Job Title, Class and Department) in the sharepoint list.  I've tried setting up a query and set field rule but it either fires all the time or none of the time.  I can't figure out what doing wrong but I'm assuming it needs to be done in expression vs straight rules and I'm not sure how to accomplish that.
