Users not always getting latest version of form

I have published new versions of forms after updating the form signing certificate. I thought users would automatically get the latest version when next opening the form but that is not happening. I tried updating a minor label in the template to force an update but no change. Only by deleting the cache in C:\Users\<user ID>\AppData\Local\Microsoft\InfoPath does it work.

Is there some easier way of forcing users to get the latest version?

I have seen another thread where the suggestion is to simply rename the template (not the XSN file) when publishing. Surely that means I would need to update the XML in all existing forms (stored in database) to use the new template name?

     Thanks

Where is the form published? Is it in a SharePoint library, a network share, somewhere else?

In InfoPath 2010+, users should generally see a yellow bar across the top of the form prompting them to update and providing a button to carry out the update (though this often takes a few seconds to show up).

Forms are published to a network share and downloaded from a website pointing to that share.

I just came back from 2 users PC now and they definitely were not getting the bar (2010) - just a certificate error from IP.  I got round it by deleting the form from the list of available forms on the File tab. Then it finally downloaded the latest version.

So either I instruct users to do that or I get the service desk to silently purge everyone's forms cache. Pain.

I believe that if the form fails to open due to a certificate error, then that will prevent them from ever getting to the point where they would see the yellow bar. In that situation, they should be able to get the latest version by opening InfoPath Filler from the Start menu, right clicking the form's icon in the list of Available Forms, and selecting Get Update of this Form.

Yes, I think that is the correct answer, rather than deleting the form.

Is it a recognised issue/bug though that IP doesn't automatically download a newer version if one is available?  I assumed it would always first check to see if an update was available before even attempting to open the cached one.

InfoPath used to work that way until InfoPath 2007, but this yellow bar functionality was added starting in 2010. I can only speculate about the reasons for this change. It could have been to allow users to use the old version for a while before they decide to update, but I'm not sure.

Oddly, I have found that if the form is accessed via a URL that has query parameters (i.e. a ?key=value&key2=value2 part), the form will update immediately before opening, but I don't think that helps in your situation because the URL in this case is a network share path.
