how to test for successful submit

I'd like to use validation rules (browser-enabled forms, no code behind), but I think I'm missing an important concept.  When my user clicks SUBMIT, I want to update a field called submitStr.  If the firing of a validation rule halts the submit action (the actual saving of the form), how can I test for that?  I only want to update submitStr if the form was actually saved or updated?

    Thank you!

Hi Susan, If you are only trying to update the submitStr field if a certain field matches a pattern or a validation condition, you may want to use that same condition on the button in order for the rule to run. I'm attaching a sample form for your reference. If not, kindly attach a sample of your form so we could investigate further.

Thank you for that reply, DonStephen, but it’s not what I’m looking for.  In the example, there’s a validation rule for Zip Code.  If I click the Submit Form button and Zip Code didn’t validate, the form would not save to SharePoint.  How do I prevent the next rule, called “update submitStr” from firing?

     Hi Susan,

How are you doing the validation for the Zip Code with Submit button? You can utilize the functionality of matching the pattern which is available as the Formatting rule. This way you can  take care of validation before even you submit the form and it is not tied to your submit button. Then you can execute the rule to "updatesubmitStr" with the Submit option. Hope it helps.

    Hi Susan,

Here's your form with added conditions to prevent the rules from running if there is a validation error.
