error: Binding a non-repeating control to a repeating field

UGH!  I am new to InfoPath, but I didn't think I was this stupid.  Hours on this problem, and I have tried many things.

I have a drop down menu that selects an item (department code) from a 3 column SP list (department code, department description, & function - departments roll up into functions).  The user sees and selects the department description and the field stores the department code.  I want the next field over to display a read only text box with the corresponding function to the department they have selected.

Here is how I got it to work:

The read only field is a calculated value displaying the function filtered by the dept code stored in dept (SP data source:  Org_Roll_up[Department_Function = Department])

Here is the problem:  when I try to publish my form, I get an error that I have a non-repeating control bound to a repeating field.  UGH - it is working, how can I clear this error?

     UPDATE:

I have cleared the error by making it a filler form only, but when the form is submitted, the promoted field/column is not showing any data in sharepoint.  To make this questions easier:  starting from scratch, what is the best way to do the following:

Have the user select a department description from a sharepoint list, show them the function that department belongs to, once they submith the form, store the department code and function in sharepoint columns from the list desscription they selected.

    Hi Chris,

It should be working just fine without the need to bind a non-repeating control to a repeating field.

You've probably made it overly complicated.

See my attached example form. Save it, right click and choose Design and then preview.

Hi - thanks for the response,

I am sure I probably overcomplicating it.  I can't open your attachment because I have InfoPath 2010.

I really do want to see how you have done this, can you please resend in the 2010 format?

    Got it!  Thanks.

OK Newbees:  Here is what I have learned.  If you are linked to a database, by default InfoPath assumes all fields are repeating fields.  So if you only intend to populate one record each time you use a table in your data source, it is very annoying because you keep getting a warning about binding repeating fields to non-repeating controls.  Here is how to fix this:  Go to Manage Connections.  Select your database connection.  Select the table that you don't want repeating (one form = one record)>  Choose Modify.  Clear the check box that allows your to repeat entries on the form.  What is cool there is that your can set this differently on each table.  If your form includes some repeating parts, but some not - set each table accordingly.

Very interesting - I did not know that! Thanks for the follow-up intel.
