    Form design

I am trying to design a form. I want to change the text on the screen depending on the users choice from a drop-down box the key field for a record.
The fields are not in the Main data source, they are in a separate file - Secondary data source.
The drop down works fine, but I can't make the other fields to show in the textboxes. The Rules don't work on one file.
All I need is to show all fields from a record in text boxes(Read Only). I have the key field on the screen, but the rest of the fields are not showing - not connecting.
If I do the same with Main and Secondary - everything works fine.

     Hi-

Would you be able to attach your form, via the Options tab? I think what you're describing is an issue with the form rules, and it's hard to provide advice without seeing those rules to see what might be incorrect.

    Thanks!

    Thanks for the reply!!!

The form is connected to Access Database and I need to attach two of them.

    The form is simple:

I have a drop-down list bound to a CourseName text field in a Workshop table.

The values are populated from a secondary data source called TestQuestions

In a simple form I would type all the users instructions on the form. I want to be able to get all the instructions from the secondary data source and show them in a Text box (read only).

This way I can use one form for all the tests.

I created a text box for the instructions and bound it to the TestQuestions. The instructions are not in the Main datasource.

The only rule I have in the drop-down list setting the value of the instructions from Info field TestQuestions  where the CourseName is current().

It is not changing when I change the choice in the drop-down list.

When I add the Info field into the Main datasource, everything works fine.

Is there a way not to bind a field to the Main datasource? If yes, HOW?

     Thanks for your help,

    Yosif

Well, there are two options I can think of:

    1. The rule is not firing because the condition (if one exists) is not being fulfilled.

    2. No value is getting set because the filter is not finding any matches.

Instead of a read only text box, why not use a calculated value to display the instructions?

There are no conditions. There is no real filter, all I am doing - showing a field from a file.

There are two fields: the key which I choose and it is showing in the drop-down box and a second field from the same record, which does not show in a text box.

I am not sure calculated value will work, I will try. I really need to show a record from a file. With SQL there nothing to do: one SELECT.

But with InfoPath it is a problem to show a record from a file!

    Thanks,

    Yosif

I'm not sure what you mean by "file", but just make sure that your secondary data sources have data in them. You can temporarily display the data from the secondary data sources in the view by dragging the nodes into the view. This will at least guarantee the data is there, and if it is there, then the problem is in the rules / form logic.

By file I mean a table.  The funny thing is that I recreated the test and it is working now. Thanks!!!

I do not understand why it did not work earlier. The only difference is that yesterday I connected InfoPath 2007 to Visual Studio 2012.

    Thanks,

    it works!

Ok, I found a solution. I created the Main data source from two tables: the table for the Main and the Secondary sources. Then I set a Relationship.

Now everything works perfect as I "have"  all Secondary fields in the Main data source and can set up a correct Filter.

    Thanks, Yosif
