How do I total without using a repeating table?

I have created a timesheet in Infopath 2010 but opted not to use repeating tables (it created more confusion amongst staff than it was worth). I have managed to calculate the elapsed time etc so each line calculates correctly, but how can I total?? I have tried fx sum and no matter what I do, the result is always NaN.

Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

I suggest trying this:

sum((firstField | secondField | thirdField | ...)[number(.) = number(.)])
