    InfoPath2010 List

Beginner here, i have an infopath list with 3 columns, 1 is ID, the other is Department & the other is Cost center. i am trying to make the form so when you choose the cost center it autopopulates the department field. i have the list setup in share point & i have to data connections, one to the departments & one to the cost center. now the ID corresponds with the Department & the Cost Center. i would think i could filter it to say if you choose Cost Center xxxxx then the corresponding Cost Center ID would reference the Department.

Any HELP!!!! would be greatly appreaciated..... Thanks in advance...

This is easy with default value filters. Set a default value on the Cost Center by double clicking on the field in the data source taskpane and clicking on the Fx button. Insert the field from the secondary data source (the list you are pulling from) and specify a filter on it where the Department in the secondary data source equals the selected department in the main data source.

To display multiple filtered items in a dropdown, right click the dropdown control and select the field from your secondary data source and you should see a filter button. Same idea here as above.

Patrick i appreciate your help. i have gotten further. but when i choose a cost center the department doesn't populate automatically. my list is a sharepoint access list. with 3 columns. 1 is the ID column which will reference the row, the second is Department & the 3rd is cost center. i want ID of row 2 to reference the department & cost center on row 2.  i thought i had it figured out with your help but i am missing something. now these are drop down lists with multiple rows. not sure if that ,matters.... one other question, should i have a data connection for each of those options or just one? right now i have a data connection for department, cost center & id.

    Thanks again

Can you attach your form under the Options tab? I might be able to give you a quick hand. :)

You have a single SharePoint List with this info? I'd have the data connection include all the fields you need - just one data connection. Can you change your form so it has a single data connection to that list with all the fields you need? Then I can help you set it up.

Ok, here it is with only 1 data connection. i am so curious to see how this works. Thank you so much...

Okay - I set the Cost Center drop down to use the data connection and set the value and display to the Cost Center field in the data connection. I set the Department dropdown with a filter to only show rows where Cost Center is equal to the selected Cost Center. Save the linked form locally, then right click and select design to take a look. To see the filter, go to the Drop Down Properties (right click menu) on the Department dropdown. Click the Select XPath button next to the Entries field. Click the Filter Data button and you'll be able to take a look at the filter I used. Hope this helps!

when i try to preview it i got an error.

    InfoPath
A call to XDocument.GetDOM failed. The DataObject "SAP Cost Center" does not exist.

Error occurred during a call to property or method 'GetDOM'.

    any thoughts?

One of your fields is relying on the data connection SAP Cost Center which was removed.
