Creating a form that queries itself

I'm somewhat new to InfoPath but have mostly only created forms that create a new record to submit or uses Sharepoint to pull up the existing record. I have a checklist that will need to be opened and closed several times to check each item. I would like to have a way to have the form use a dropdown to choose the appropriate record from the list and then the user can update the appropriate checkboxes and then save it. So next time when they re-open it they can check off something new, etc.

How would I go about doing this?

If your form is submitting to a SharePoint form library, you can simply reopen the existing record (XML) and resubmit it. If your SharePoint library submit is configured correctly, this will overwrite the XML in the form library.

You could create a "dashboard" form, which asks users to select an item from the dropdown, loads the data from that XML, and allows the user to overwrite. That's a lot more difficult and probably requires code.

So if the first option sounds reasonable, try it out before venturing into the second alternative, because it will be much more difficult to put together.

    Good luck!
