Connecting an InfoPath form with a Sharepoint List

I'll look through the forums to see if this has already been answered but thought I would also post it and see if I can get an answer.

What I have is a Sharepoint list. Its departments with employees and hours that will be planned against those departments. About 130 rows and potentially 200 columns.

Currently we do all this in an Excel spreadsheet with lookups and then calculations. Want to move it to Sharepoint for various reasons.

Have tried to do this in just lists but keep running into limitations. Can get all the data into lists but its the calculations that cause the issues.

I need a form that will pull the information for just a specific department; all the various hours and employees by type and month. Allow the manager of the department to make changes to the number of employees in any month - like run a scenario to match a desired efficiency. This affects the later months and the total hours, etc. It updates the later months fields.

Can this be done in a form? Pull the specific info, make updates, then save back to the list? Can it be done in a saved infopath document that could be reopened and updated again?

     Thanks for any help, Mike

Retrieving data from a SP list in InfoPath is pretty easy.  Just create a secondary data connection (Data -> Data connections) to receive data from a SharePoint List.  This will pull in all the data from that list into the InfoPath form.  You can even filter the data by using queryFields to limit which items are displayed.

Writing the data back to SharePoint is a little trickier.  I would suggest using our SubmitToSharePointList functionality which is probably your best bet.  Here is a link with more info: http://www.infopathdev.com/files/folders/qrules/entry49216.aspx
