Hi Ken,
You could do this using FilterOwssvr (client call to SharePoint Web service) or a Web Service (middle-tier filtering). Qdabra Software, sponsor of this free forum, provides qRules that has built-in support for FilterOwssvr. It's cheap (free trial available) and should be quick to add. If you prefer not to buy a third-party InfoPath plugin, you can just search this forum for FilterOwssvr. The web probably has some good docs on it too.
The Web Service approach is slightly more flexible. Qdabra has an inexpensive web service suite called DBXL that provides a QuerySharePoint Web service. You can quickly install the free trial and use the Query Builder tool to configure your query and parameterize your onload logic to make it load quickly. You could spend time to write your own Web service and there are numerous threads here on InfoPathDev if you search and samples on InfoPath's blog.
Best of luck!
