Hi again,

Is there an easy way other than validation to offer the user help on filling in the form, e.g. a help button next to the box being filled in which produces a help comment.

I think the easiest way to add help text is in the Tooltip. Double-click the control, click Advanced tab, and then add help text to the Tooltip field.
