    Auto-numbering Forms

I'm new to Sharepoint and InfoPath.. and I am not a programmer...

I'm developing a Customer Complaints Database where the Form (created in InfoPath for publication on a Sharepoint site) will capture data into a SQL database.

I have no idea about coding, and need a simple way of having the form assigning an automatically generated ID number to each record at some point (probably when the user saves).

Can anyone suggest how I could do this in the form design in InfoPath??

I've seen a couple of threads on here, but all refer to altering of code, which I am unable to do at this stage.

    regards

    Shakra

ok this is what I am looking to achieve:

    1. Form to collect data into a SQL database. This form will be made available via Sharepoint, but the data is to be captured into a database to allow for easy reporting.
    2. Users completing the form do not have access to InfoPath, so the code will need to be altered to allow for the form to be completed without the use of InfoPath.

These are the basics I'd like to resolve prior to moving onto creating report queries etc on Sharepoint.

Currently, I'm completing the design of the form. Almmost Done.

One of the important features required is when a user clicks on the form in Sharepoint (i.e to create a new record in the database) I'd like a number to be automatically assigned and unique. I want the number to appear on the form automatically.

Is it possible to automate this?

    Hello,
I have a doubt about your second point above. If the User doesnt have access to Infopath How will he fill the form. If you want to fill out the form, Infopath needs to be installed in the Client Machine.

Here's a simple idea. In the data connection where you set up the save to SharePoint, they ask for a file name. We concatenated the date and time and added that to the user's last name. A given user would not submit two different forms at the exact same second, thus this gives us unique form names.

That suited our needs; might suit yours.

FYI: It is in fact possible by saving the form to MHT: I'm looking to make contact with any users that have experience with this...

Quoted from another forum: "If you export the form to MHT and post that to SharePoint you can do as you are saying.

InfoPath also has a level 3 security (i.e. Full Trust) method that will allow you to do this when the user clicks submit or save. "

    Hello

Users will only be able to view the data in the MHT file but cannot edit it.
This is a discussion from the Link below FYI

    Host: Ned (Microsoft)
Q: Will we be able to create forms that can be completed online without the client having InfoPath installed and have the results collected on SQL?

A: Forms can be exported as MHT to be viewed on the web by users who do not have InfoPath, but they will not be able to enter data.

Please Read the discussion at the below link

I hope this will help you.
