IT Department Issues: Infopath and Sharepoint

Hi, This may seem an odd request yet I work at a major NHS Trust in England and work in clinical governance and I have the worst IT department in the world. We have a Sharepoint intranet yet the IT department have barred xsn files being uploaded - they've had the technology for at least 3 years yet have done Jack with it. I have made a form at home using c# for reviewing our divisions risk register, allowing managers to review their risks, and to print reports. I would like to be able to display this as a form on a Sharepoint page yet am unable to upload the form to our Clinical Governance workspace. Could anybody please suggest a work around? Thanks T-Bone Safari

Hey T-Bone Safari, welcome to the IPDEV forums!

Yes, we have had a number of customers who run into this issue.

To clarify are you talking about IPFS/InfoPath Browser based forms?  Or you can't create your own InfoPath (rich client libraries) at all?

If the issue is with browser based forms (and the reason being that IPFS with code behind requires Admin approval in SharePoint) the workaround generally is to try to figure out how to remove the code in your form and figure out a way to accomplish what you need to do with rules etc in the form.

Hi Ted, The 'average' user, such as me, are barred from uploading anything other than Word, PDF, txt and Excel etc files...such a joke! I could put the xsn file on a shared network drive but then it loads in Infopath rather than being displayed on the webpage as I would really like it to. Thanks for your reply T-Bone I tried to use a webpart - page or some other viewer but again that didn't work...I can't remember what the message was but it wouldn't display as the tutorials suggested and still loaded in Infopath, Thanks again T-Bone

Sounds like the IT folks don't understand SharePoint too much if they won't let you publish to SharePoint.

I am sure you have tried a lot of things - but have you tried asking them if they will give you a subsite on the SharePoint Farm where you can be an admin and manage this?  Or is that just totally against policy?  If they are really going to lock things down this tight you don't have a lot of alternatives unless you can somehow get your own servers and just do SharePoint yourself!

That would be totally against policy, and our Divison is about 8M pounds in the red so getting our own server is out of the question...I think the only real option I have is to re-do what I have already using a webform webpart in Javascript...but I've never been that interested in that and would take me weeks to develop. When you're working with clinicians that aren't that IT literate (why should they be??!) they like the format and familiarity of an 'office' based solution to anything else

    Hey T-Bone Safari,

One option is to create a URN based InfoPath form that installs on computers via e-mail (or an MSI) and has qRules built into it so that when they submit it maps data to a SharePoint list and sends e-mail with the XML attached. That would require InfoPath rich client though.
