    Upgrading/Updating WF task form

Hi, I've custom WF developed with VS2008, WF tasks are implemented as InfoPath forms. The WF and the forms are deployed as a feature in a solution. Now I'm checking the upgrading/updating procedure to a new version while letting existing instance of the WF to be competed safely. I'm having hard times finding how to upgrade or even add new task form (Retracting and removing the solution is not an option since it will break existing running instances). How can I simply upgrade or add new workflow IP task form to central admin? Here's what I've tried so far:
    1. Tried to upload an upgraded form to the central admin form management - it does not allow to update forms which have installed as feature.
    2. Tried to upload new IP form - it's not 'workflow compatible', probably because the forms server demand WF forms to be deployed as feature.
    3. Tried to put updated forms in my solution (WSP) and run stsadm -o upgradesolution - this indeed upgraded the WF but the IP forms are left unchanged.
    4. Similar to step 3, I've tried to create new IP form, put it inside the WSP package and ran stsadm -o upgradesolution - the new form was not added to the forms library.

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

    Hi Yonatann,

You're trying something we've never done before so I can't help you much. It's possible that SharePoint just doesn't support the modification you are trying. It's true the InfoPath has auto-upgrade support built-into it such that if you add non-required nodesto the XSN schema, the XML is auto-upgraded, but for SharePoint WFs, it's quite possible that the schema is not upgradable. I just don't know. Best checking with MS.

    Good luck!

    Re: Upgrading/Updating WF task form

This is no small feat.  I have been struggling with this all day and to the best of my knowledge, you are really stuck.  It almost seems you would be better off creating a whole new project, and rename/id everything.  Yes, workflows support versioning, and so do infopath forms but you do this at your own risk and there is little documentation on how to do this with any certainty.  I have been struggling with this for some time now. InfoPath has the advantage of easy to create forms but really painful to deploy using a solution package.  I couldn't get my new forms to publish correctly over an old one....everything seemed like it upgraded fine but I couldn't get the new form to show in my newly deployed workflow.

I think your safest bet would be to rename everything and create a new project, this way you will not have any issues if you ever decide to uninstall the previous workflow.  Keeping them completely independant will be your safest option....let me know how it goes, I am curious to know.  The topic is hard to Google...I know, I have tried.
